European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her heartfelt condolences to Spain following the tragic fatalities caused by severe flooding. She described the extensive damage and loss of life as “devastating.”

“Entire villages have been submerged in mud,” von der Leyen noted. “People are taking shelter in trees, and vehicles are being carried away by powerful floodwaters.”

According to von der Leyen, the disaster has claimed dozens of lives, displaced thousands, and left countless families grieving. She conveyed sympathy to the victims, their families, and friends, and also commended the rescue teams on the ground.

The European Union, von der Leyen added, is ready to support Spain by coordinating humanitarian aid and providing satellite imaging resources to assist with flood damage assessments.
