Following Ballot Drop Boxes arson incidents in Vancouver, WA, and Portland, OR, the FBI and local authorities are ramping up their investigation into these election-related attacks.
Officials have reported that forensic evidence has been collected from incendiary devices used in both fires, allowing investigators to link Monday’s incidents. Additionally, the same type of device was placed at another ballot drop box in Vancouver on October 8; however, no ballots were damaged in that earlier incident.
Authorities confirmed that the incendiary devices were placed externally on the ballot boxes, likely intended to damage the contents within. Following the incident, Portland Police Bureau shared surveillance images of a dark-colored Volvo S-60 believed to be associated with the recent ballot box fires.
Currently, no arrests have been made, and the FBI has urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
Enhanced Security and Ballot Retrieval Protocols
Washington election official Greg Kimsey advised voters who used the Vancouver transit center drop box after 11 a.m. on Saturday to contact his office for a replacement ballot. Voters are also encouraged to verify their ballot’s status on the official state website, vote.wa.gov.
To safeguard ballot security, officials have increased both the retrieval frequency of ballots and law enforcement patrols around ballot drop box locations.
